A converter dolly is simply a coupling device — one or two axles with a fifth wheel on top — that turns the front of the rear trailer into something the lead trailer can tow.
A few details from the coupling routine show up again and again on the test. The trailer you are about to back a fifth wheel under should sit slightly lower than the fifth wheel, so the trailer is lifted a little as the fifth wheel slides beneath it — this guarantees solid contact and a proper lock. The pintle hook that ties the dolly's drawbar eye to the rear of the trailer ahead must be fully latched and locked. And after every connection you make, you confirm it with a tug test: set the trailer brakes and gently pull forward in low gear; if everything is locked, the rig does not move. Never trust a connection you have not tugged.
Uncoupling safely
Uncoupling a multi-trailer rig is coupling in reverse, and the same caution applies: never let a trailer or a dolly roll. Because a converter dolly normally has no spring (parking) brakes, the moment you start disconnecting, nothing may be holding it. Always chock the wheels of the dolly and of any trailer that lacks spring brakes before you unlock anything. Lower the landing gear to take the weight before you pull the fifth wheel release, unlock in the right order, and ease the tractor (and the units still attached) clear slowly so nothing drops or rolls. The air lines, glad hands and the tractor protection valve
Every trailer in the set has to receive air, and the connections that carry it are where many doubles-and-triples mistakes happen. Glad hands are the coupling devices that join the service and emergency air lines from one unit to the next. Their rubber seals must be clean and pressed firmly together, or air leaks and the brakes behind that point will not work properly. The service line (also called the control or signal line) carries the air that your brake pedal and trailer hand valve send when you brake. The emergency line (also called the supply line, usually colour-coded red) feeds the trailer air tanks and controls the emergency brakes — if the emergency line loses pressure, the trailer's emergency brakes apply on their own.
The single most dangerous air-line error is crossing the service and emergency lines. Cross them and the trailer air tanks will not charge and the trailer brakes will not release or apply correctly — you could pull away convinced you have trailer brakes when you have none. That is why you always charge the trailer air and then test that the trailer brakes actually work before driving. Tied to this is the tractor protection valve: when the emergency line loses pressure, this valve closes and the dashboard air supply (trailer) knob pops out, sealing the tractor's air so you keep enough to stop the power unit even if a trailer breaks away.
Converter dollies and why you must chock the wheels
The converter dolly deserves its own paragraph because it is unique to doubles and triples and because it is the part most likely to roll away and hurt someone. A dolly is a small wheeled frame — one or two axles — carrying a fifth wheel, plus a drawbar with an eye that drops onto the pintle hook of the trailer ahead. Trailer placement: why the heaviest trailer goes first
Where you put each load is not a matter of convenience — it is a safety rule with a number behind it. The heaviest trailer must go directly behind the tractor, and the lightest trailer goes at the rear. Loading heaviest-to-lightest from front to back keeps the combination stable. Do the opposite — a light trailer in front, a heavy one at the back — and you dramatically increase rearward amplification, the tendency of the rear of the rig to swing out farther and faster than the front during a sudden maneuver. Within each trailer, keep the cargo's centre of gravity low and the weight balanced, because a high or lopsided load rolls far more easily, especially at the back of the combination.
Rollover, rearward amplification and the crack-the-whip effect

In a multi-trailer rig, each trailer is more likely to roll over than the one in front of it, and the rear trailer is the most likely of all — the rear trailer of a set of triples is roughly three and a half times more likely to roll over than an ordinary five-axle tractor-trailer. The defence is entirely in your hands. Steer smoothly and avoid sudden moves; slow down well before curves, ramps and exits rather than braking in them; and keep so much space around you that you never need a hard swerve. Remember too that lightly loaded trailers ride high and roll more easily than you expect, so a near-empty rear trailer is not a free pass to drive fast. Smooth inputs and lower speeds are what keep all the wheels on the ground.
Inspecting doubles and triples — the checks that matter
Beyond a normal combination-vehicle inspection, doubles and triples add a set of checks around the extra trailers and the dolly, and the test loves the shut-off (cut-out) valve positions. Picture the air flowing from the tractor to the very back, and the rule makes sense:
- Shut-off valves at the rear of the front and middle trailers: must be OPEN, so service and emergency air can pass through to the trailers behind them.
- Shut-off valves at the rear of the very last trailer: must be CLOSED, to seal the end of the system so it can hold pressure.
- The converter dolly air tank drain valve: must be CLOSED, or the dolly's air will simply leak out.
- Air all the way to the back: with the system charged, open the emergency line shut-off at the rear of the last trailer — you should hear air escape, proving air reaches the back — then close it. Make a brake application and open the service line valve at the back to confirm service air gets there too, then close it.
- Couplings: confirm the fifth wheel jaws are locked around each kingpin, the pintle hook is latched and locked, safety chains or devices are secured, and there is no gap between upper and lower fifth wheels.
Two reasons this matters beyond the test: a single wrong valve means some trailer's brakes will not work, and a dolly or trailer that is not properly coupled can come loose at speed. Walk the whole rig, front to back, every time.
Driving doubles and triples safely
A long combination needs more of everything: more room, more time, and a much smoother hand. Leave extra following distance — a longer, heavier rig takes longer to stop and is far harder to maneuver out of trouble — and look far ahead so you can adjust early instead of reacting late. Make turns wider than feels natural, because the rear trailers off-track (cut to the inside of a turn) and can climb a curb or clip whatever is on the inside of the corner. On slippery roads, doubles and triples are especially prone to jackknife and skid, so cut your speed well before curves and brake gently and early.
