The Combination Vehicles knowledge test is one of three written tests you stack up for a Class A commercial learner's permit. You start with General Knowledge (the safe-driving core every CDL holder must pass), add Air Brakes (because nearly every combination uses them), and then take Combination Vehicles for the skills unique to pulling a trailer. Coupling: the order that keeps the trailer attached
Coupling is a sequence, and the sequence exists because skipping a step is how trailers come loose. The safe order is: inspect the fifth wheel and the area, make sure the trailer wheels are chocked or its brakes are set so it cannot move, and check the trailer height — the front of the trailer should be low enough that the tractor raises it slightly as the fifth wheel backs under it. Back slowly and straight in your lowest reverse gear until the fifth wheel just touches the trailer; do not hit it hard. Then supply air to the trailer, back fully under until the kingpin locks into the jaws, and secure the tractor (set the parking brake, put it out of gear) before you climb out to check. Two height mistakes cause real damage: if the trailer is too low, the tractor can strike and damage it instead of sliding under; if it is too high, the kingpin can miss the jaws or ride up over the top of the fifth wheel.
The fifth wheel and kingpin — proving the lock
The whole rig hangs on one connection, so the test cares deeply that you can prove it is locked. After backing under, do a tug test: with the trailer brakes still set, put the tractor in a low gear and gently pull forward against the locked kingpin. If the rig stays joined, the lock is holding. Then get out with a flashlight and look: the locking jaws must have closed around the shank of the kingpin, not over the top of its head, and the locking lever must be in the locked position with its safety catch engaged over the lever. Critically, there must be no gap between the trailer apron and the fifth wheel — a visible space there usually means the kingpin is sitting on top of the closed jaws rather than inside them, and the trailer can drop or come off. Never trust the coupling on the strength of the tug test alone; the visual check is what catches the dangerous "high hitch."
Air lines and glad hands
Two air lines run from the tractor to the trailer through coupling connectors called glad hands. The service (control) line carries the air that applies the trailer brakes when you press the pedal or use the trailer hand valve; the emergency (supply) line carries the air that charges the trailer's air tanks and releases its spring brakes. Many rigs colour-code them — blue for service, red for emergency — and use different-shaped or differently positioned couplers so you cannot easily mix them up. Mixing them is dangerous: if you cross the air lines, you may be able to drive away but you would have no trailer brakes when you press the pedal, because the brake-application air is going to the wrong place. Before coupling the glad hands, check the rubber seals (grommets) and clean the connectors, and make sure the lines will not be cut, crushed, tangled or dragging once you pull away.
The trailer air-brake controls
Three controls send and cut air to the trailer, and the test wants you to know exactly what each one does. The trailer air supply valve is the red, eight-sided knob on the dash: you push it in to send air to the trailer (charging its tanks and releasing its spring parking brakes) and pull it out to shut the air off and set the trailer's emergency brakes. The tractor protection valve, which that knob controls, keeps air in the tractor's own brakes if the trailer breaks away or springs a bad leak; it closes automatically when system pressure falls into roughly the 20 to 45 psi range, which also applies the trailer emergency brakes. The trailer hand valve (also called the trolley valve or Johnson bar) applies only the trailer brakes — and you should use it only to test that the trailer brakes work. Do not use it for parking, because the air can leak off and let the rig roll, and never use it to "straighten out" a skid, because applying only the trailer brakes is exactly what causes a trailer to jackknife. To park, always set the spring (parking) brakes.
Trailer jackknife and skids
A trailer jackknife happens when the trailer wheels lock up and the trailer swings out to one side, trying to come around the tractor. It is more likely when the trailer is empty or lightly loaded, because light trailers have less weight pressing their tires down, so the wheels lock and skid more easily. The earliest way to catch it is in your mirrors — any time you brake hard, glance at the trailer to make sure it is staying in line. The fix is counter-intuitive but simple: release the brakes so the trailer wheels can roll and regain traction; once they grip, the trailer follows the tractor and straightens out. Do not reach for the trailer hand valve to try to pull the rig straight — the trailer brakes caused the skid, so adding more trailer braking makes it worse. A tractor jackknife, by contrast, comes from the tractor's own drive wheels locking, and is corrected the same way: get off the brakes to let the wheels roll.
Rollover: keep the load low and slow down
More than half of the truck-driver deaths in rollover crashes involve a single, preventable mistake, and the two causes the test hammers are going too fast in a turn and a high centre of gravity. A loaded trailer with cargo stacked high, or weight piled to one side, tips far more easily — so load heavy cargo low and keep it centred. Most rollovers happen on curves and on highway on- and off-ramps, where drivers carry too much speed into a tightening bend. The defence is to slow down before the curve, not in it, and to take ramps well under the posted truck speed if your load is tall or top-heavy. Remember that the posted ramp speed is set for an average vehicle, not a fully loaded high rig; when in doubt, slower is always the safe answer on this test.
Rearward amplification and steering
A combination does not steer like a car, and the reason is rearward amplification — the "crack-the-whip" effect. A quick steering movement at the tractor is multiplied by the time it reaches the back of the rig, so a small, fast jerk of the wheel can throw the rear trailer sideways with several times the force, enough to roll it over. It is worst on doubles and triples, where the last trailer can swing with two to three and a half times your steering input. The defence is to steer gently and gradually, avoid sudden lane changes, and slow down before you need to turn so you never have to make a hard, sudden correction. This is also why you keep cargo low and centred and leave extra following space: the more gently you can drive, the less the back of the rig is ever asked to whip around.
Turning, off-tracking and backing
Because the trailer wheels follow a shorter, inside path than the tractor's front wheels in a turn — a behaviour called off-tracking or "cheating" — a combination needs room a straight truck does not. The safe technique is to turn wide as you complete the turn, not before it: keep the rear of your vehicle close to the curb so you do not invite a car to squeeze up on your right, and let the tractor swing far enough out that the trailer clears the inside of the corner. Backing a trailer is the opposite of backing a car — when you turn the wheel one way, the trailer goes the other — so the rules are strict: back as little as possible, back slowly, use a helper and agreed hand signals, and pull forward to reposition whenever the trailer drifts off your intended path rather than fighting it in reverse.
Inspecting a coupled combination
A combination inspection adds a set of checks a single truck never needs, all centred on the connection. At the fifth wheel, look for cracked or missing parts, a fifth wheel that is loose on its mountings or tilted, the locking jaws closed around the kingpin shank, the safety catch engaged, and no gap between the apron and the plate. If the rig has a sliding fifth wheel, check that it is locked in place and that its position keeps the weight legal and leaves enough turning clearance. Check the air and electrical lines for cuts, cracks, wear and secure connections, and make sure they are not tangled, pinched or dragging. Confirm the landing gear (dolly legs) is fully raised, the crank handle is secured, and no parts are missing or bent. Finally, look at the trailer itself — frame, tires, lights, reflectors and that the load is secure.
Antilock brakes on trailers
Trailers and converter dollies built after March 1, 1998 are required to have antilock brakes (ABS), and many older ones have it too. On a trailer, the yellow ABS malfunction lamp is mounted on the left (road) side; if it stays on after you start moving, the trailer's ABS is not working and needs service, though your normal brakes still function. ABS does the same job on a trailer that it does anywhere else: it keeps the wheels from locking during hard braking so you keep steering control and the trailer is less likely to swing out into a jackknife. It does not necessarily stop you in a shorter distance, and a rig can have ABS on the tractor, the trailer, both or neither — so know what your equipment has and still brake smoothly.
Uncoupling without dropping the trailer
Uncoupling has its own order, and the danger is letting the trailer fall or roll. Position the rig straight, ease the pressure off the fifth wheel locking jaws by backing up gently with the trailer brakes set (this makes the release handle easier to pull), and lower the landing gear until it just makes firm contact with the ground — then a few extra turns to lift a little weight off the tractor, but never so much that you raise the trailer off the fifth wheel. Chock the trailer wheels if it does not have spring brakes holding it. Disconnect the air and electrical lines and secure them so they will not be damaged, pull the fifth wheel release handle to the open position, and only then slowly drive the tractor partway out from under the trailer, stop, and inspect that the trailer is firmly supported before pulling clear.

1. Trusting the tug test alone. A high hitch can pass a tug test — you must look with a flashlight for jaws around the kingpin shank and no gap under the apron. 2.
