How the test is structured
The General Knowledge test is the foundation of the whole CDL. Whatever class of vehicle you want — a Class A combination, a Class B straight truck or bus, or a Class C smaller vehicle — and whatever endorsements you add later, you must pass General Knowledge first. In most states it is 50 multiple-choice questions and you need at least 80 percent — 40 correct — to pass; that 80 percent standard is set by federal rule, so it is the same everywhere even though a few states tweak the question count. Separate written tests cover air brakes, combination vehicles and each endorsement such as tanker, hazardous materials, doubles/triples or passenger. This practice test deliberately concentrates on the shared General Knowledge core, because that is the part every applicant has to master and the part most of your written-test points come from. Inspecting your vehicle
The single most important reason to inspect a commercial vehicle is safety — a defect that goes unnoticed can become a crash, a breakdown in traffic or a costly out-of-service violation. A proper inspection happens in three places: a thorough pre-trip inspection before you drive, ongoing checks en route (watch your gauges and use your senses for anything that looks, sounds, smells or feels wrong), and a post-trip inspection and report at the end. Federal cargo rules also require you to check that your load is secure within the first 50 miles and then re-check it at least every 150 miles or every 3 hours, whichever comes first.
Two details trip people up. To know whether a tire is correctly inflated you must use a tire pressure gauge — you cannot judge pressure reliably by kicking or thumping the tire or by looking at it. And tread is measured precisely: a steering-axle (front) tire needs at least 4/32 inch of tread depth in every major groove, while other tires need at least 2/32 inch. During the walk-around you are hunting for the things that cause crashes: leaks under the vehicle, low or flat tires, loose or missing lug nuts, cracked or worn brake parts, bad lights and reflectors, and an insecure load.
Basic control, shifting and backing
Smooth control of a heavy vehicle is mostly about being gentle and looking far ahead. When you shift up, you do it by watching your engine speed (rpm) and your road speed rather than guessing, and you never coast in neutral to "save fuel," because you lose the ability to power out of trouble. Backing is where new drivers cause the most damage, so the rules are strict: back as little as you can, back slowly, and whenever you have a choice, back toward the driver's (left) side so you can see down the side of the vehicle out of your own window. Always get out and walk around to look at your path first — the habit drivers call G-O-A-L: Get Out And Look — and use a helper to watch your blind side, agreeing on hand signals before you start.
Communicating and seeing
A large vehicle cannot stop or swerve quickly, so communicating your intentions early is a safety tool, not a courtesy. Signal early and keep signalling all the way through a turn or lane change, then make sure the signal cancels afterward. To communicate your presence when another driver may not have seen you, tap the horn lightly or, at dusk and at night, flash your lights — a long blast of the horn usually startles people and makes things worse. Seeing hazards means using your mirrors regularly and knowing your blind spots: large vehicles have deep no-see areas directly behind, along the right side and just below and in front of the cab. Look 12 to 15 seconds ahead — roughly a block in town or a quarter-mile on the highway — so you spot trouble while you still have room to react.
Managing space
Because a truck or bus needs so much room to stop, space management is your main margin of safety. The guideline for following distance is one second for every 10 feet of vehicle length at speeds under about 40 mph, plus one extra second above 40 mph. So a 40-foot rig needs four seconds below 40 mph and five seconds above it; to measure, watch the vehicle ahead pass a fixed point and count the seconds until you reach the same point. Leave space to the sides too — avoid driving alongside others where you could be boxed in — and mind the space above: never assume a posted bridge or overpass clearance is correct, because a repaved road or a heavy load can change your actual height. If you must stop on or beside the road, switch on your hazard flashers and set out your warning triangles within ten minutes, at about 10, 100 and 100 feet (one ahead) on a two-way road, or 10, 100 and 200 feet behind on a one-way or divided highway.
Controlling speed and stopping distance
Speed is the factor you most directly control, and it drives the maths of stopping. Total stopping distance is the sum of perception distance (how far you travel while your brain registers a hazard), reaction distance (how far you travel while you move your foot to the brake) and braking distance (how far the vehicle travels once the brakes are working). On a vehicle with air brakes there is a fourth piece, brake-lag distance, because the air takes about half a second to act. At 55 mph on dry pavement a heavy vehicle needs well over 400 feet to stop — far more than a car, and roughly the length of a football field and a half. Crucially, stopping distance does not shrink in a simple line with speed: it grows with the square of speed, so doubling your speed roughly quadruples your braking distance.
One fact catches many candidates: an empty truck can take longer to stop than a loaded one. Truck brakes and tires are tuned to grip best under a full load, so an empty vehicle has less weight pressing its tires to the road, the wheels lock more easily, and locked wheels skid. Match your speed to the conditions: slow before a curve, not in it, because braking hard mid-curve can break traction; and on wet roads remember that water cuts grip and that hydroplaning — tires riding on a film of water — can start around 30 mph and worsens with worn tread. If you begin to hydroplane, do not brake or steer hard; ease off the accelerator until the tires touch down again.
Night driving and bad weather
At night you can only safely drive as fast as your headlights let you see, so you must not overdrive your headlights — if you cannot stop within the distance you can see ahead, you are going too fast. In fog, slow right down, use low beams (high beams reflect back and dazzle you), and use your wipers and defroster; if it is too thick, the safest choice is to pull completely off the road and wait. In winter, watch for black ice, a thin clear layer that makes the road look merely wet, and remember that bridges and overpasses freeze first because cold air circulates above and below them. Skids, braking and emergencies
Most skids come from driving too fast for conditions, and the two you must know are easy to mix up. A drive-wheel skid, usually from over-acceleration on a slippery road, is corrected by taking your foot off the accelerator and, if the rear is sliding, steering in the direction you want the front to go. For an emergency stop in a vehicle without anti-lock brakes you use one of two techniques: controlled braking means pressing the brakes as hard as you can without locking the wheels, keeping steering inputs tiny; stab braking means pressing fully until the wheels lock, releasing until they roll again, then pressing fully once more — and you must wait for the wheels to start rolling, which can take up to a second, before reapplying.
If your vehicle has anti-lock brakes (ABS), the technique is simpler: in an emergency you press the pedal fully and hold it, and the system pulses the pressure to stop the wheels locking so you keep steering control. ABS does not necessarily stop you in a shorter distance — its job is to let you steer around an obstacle while braking hard. For other emergencies, remember the priorities: if a tire blows, hold the wheel firmly, stay off the brake, let the vehicle slow, then ease off the road. If your brakes fade or fail on a downgrade, downshift, pump hydraulic brakes to build pressure, use the parking (emergency) brake gently, and look for an escape ramp. And in the mountains, the rules are simple: pick a safe low gear before the descent so the engine helps brake, and use light intermittent applications rather than riding the brakes, which overheats them and causes brake fade.
Staying alert, alcohol and drugs
Fatigue is one of the biggest dangers in commercial driving, and the only real cure is sleep — not coffee, fresh air or loud music, which wear off quickly. Plan to drive when you are normally awake, take breaks, and get off the road if you catch yourself drifting, missing exits or struggling to keep your eyes open. On alcohol, the commercial standard is far stricter than for ordinary drivers: the federal limit for operating a commercial motor vehicle is a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04 percent, half the usual 0.08 limit, and 0.04 or higher means disqualification, while even 0.02 to 0.039 puts you out of service for 24 hours. The most important fact to remember is that only time removes alcohol from your body; nothing speeds it up. Many prescription and over-the-counter medicines can also impair you, so always check whether a drug is safe before driving.
Cargo: weight and balance
How you load matters as much as how much you load. Know your weight limits: GVWR is the maximum a single vehicle is rated to weigh, GCWR is the maximum for a combination of vehicle plus trailer and load, and axle weight is how much weight rests on a given set of axles — overloading any of these is illegal and dangerous. The other half is balance. A high centre of gravity makes a vehicle far more likely to roll over, especially in a curve or a sudden swerve, so heavy cargo goes low; and a load that is piled or shifted to one side can cause a rollover too. Cargo must be secured so it cannot shift or fall: the rule of thumb is at least one tie-down for every 10 feet of cargo, with a minimum of two tie-downs for any load, and more for heavy or unstable items. Re-check your securement during the trip, because tie-downs loosen as you drive.
Accidents, fires and hazardous materials
At an accident scene your priorities are to protect the area (park safely, put on flashers, set out warning devices), notify the authorities, and care for the injured without moving them unless there is danger such as fire. For fires, use the right extinguisher and the right method: a B:C-rated extinguisher handles electrical and burning-liquid (fuel) fires, and you should never put water on a gasoline or electrical fire, which can spread the flames or shock you; aim the extinguisher at the base of the fire from upwind, and only fight a small fire you are sure you can handle. A driver who handles placarded hazardous materials needs a special endorsement and must understand that placards exist to warn others and emergency crews of the risk being carried — they are a safety system, not decoration, and the correct placards and shipping papers are a legal requirement.
