The math it runs for you
The width part is simple multiplication: stitches equal your finished width times your gauge in stitches per inch (or per centimetre). A 30-inch piece at twelve stitches over four inches — that is three stitches per inch — needs ninety stitches. The clever parts are what comes next. First, if your pattern is "multiple of 3 + 2", ninety does not fit, so the tool finds the nearest count that does — here it nudges to ninety-two, which is three times thirty plus two, thirty whole repeats. Second, it converts your stitch count into a chain count by adding the turning-chain allowance for your stitch. Under the classic method, where the turning chain counts as the first stitch, single and half double add one chain, double adds two, and treble adds three; and you work your first stitch into the second, third, fourth or fifth chain from the hook respectively. The turning-chain rule, finally explained

The turning chain is the little stack of chains at the start of a row that lifts your yarn up to the height of the stitch you are about to make. The argument is whether it counts as a stitch.
