What "increase or decrease evenly" really means

It is one of the most common instructions in knitting and crochet patterns, and one of the most quietly frustrating. A designer writes "increase 12 stitches evenly across the row" because they want the shaping spread out smoothly — not lumped together where it would pull the fabric or show as a visible line. The trouble is they leave the actual spacing to you. Do that math wrong and your increases drift to one side, leaving a baggy patch or a crooked edge. This calculator removes the guesswork: it takes your current stitch count and your target, works out how far apart each increase or decrease should sit, and hands you a sequence you can knit straight from.

How to read the result: a sequence like K8, M1, (K9, M1) 4 times, K8 means knit 8, make one, then repeat "knit 9, make one" four times, then knit the last 8. The bracketed part is the repeat; the plain numbers at the ends keep the shaping off the edges of a flat row.

The math it does for you

For an increase, the calculator divides your stitches into evenly sized knit groups separated by a "make one". For a decrease, it works out how many plain stitches sit between each "knit two together", remembering that every decrease swallows two stitches. When the numbers do not divide perfectly — and they usually do not — it shares the leftover stitches out so that only a few groups are a single stitch longer than the rest. That is exactly how a seasoned knitter fudges the spacing by eye, done precisely. The sequence it produces always adds back up to your original stitch count and lands on your target, so you can trust it without re-counting.

A quick worked example

You have 100 stitches and the pattern says increase 12 evenly. Twelve increases split a flat row into thirteen knit groups. One hundred does not divide neatly by thirteen, so the calculator gives you mostly groups of about 8 stitches with a couple slightly larger, and it tucks smaller groups at each end so the first and last increases are not jammed against the edge. The result ends with exactly 112 stitches, evenly shaped — and you never had to do long division on the sofa.

A second example — a hat crown in the round

Hats are where even decreasing earns its keep. Picture the usual bottom-up beanie: you have 96 stitches around and you want to close the crown smoothly. Increase and decrease — and the two-stitch rule

There is one piece of arithmetic that quietly wrecks more rows than any other: an increase adds a stitch out of thin air, but a decrease swallows two stitches to make one. If you space decreases as though each used a single stitch, your sequence runs short and the last decrease ends up jammed against the edge. This calculator accounts for it automatically — for a decrease it first sets aside two stitches for every k2tog, then spaces only the plain stitches that remain. That is why the maximum you can remove in a single even row is half your stitches: take out any more and there are not enough stitches left to sit between the decreases. Wherever the calculator prints M1, work any single increase from the top of the table; wherever it prints k2tog, work any single decrease. For the most polished look on a flat piece, mirror your decreases — ssk where the shaping leans one way, k2tog where it leans the other — so both sides of the garment match.

How even is "even enough"?

Knitters new to shaping often expect every gap to be identical, and worry when the result shows groups of, say, eight and nine stitches side by side. Here is the reassurance: unless your stitch count happens to divide perfectly by the number of events, a one-stitch difference is unavoidable, and it is also imperceptible. Across a fabric of dozens of stitches, the eye reads the shaping as evenly spread long before it could ever notice that one knit group is a single stitch wider than its neighbour. What the eye does notice is clustering — three increases bunched near the start, then a long plain stretch. That is the failure this tool exists to prevent. Row vs round — why the toggle matters

On a flat row you have two edges, and shaping placed right at the edge makes seaming awkward and can flare the selvedge. On a round there is no edge at all — the fabric is a continuous spiral or loop — so the events should be spaced equally the whole way around, including across the "join". Common mistakes this prevents

Cramming shaping at the start. Dividing stitches by increases and working them all early leaves a baggy, lopsided row. Even spacing fixes it.
Forgetting a decrease eats two stitches. Spacing decreases as if they used one stitch each throws the count off. The tool accounts for it.

When to split shaping across several rows

If your pattern says "decrease 30 stitches evenly" across a 120-stitch row, the tool will happily space them — but 30 decreases crammed into one row creates a sharp, almost pleated change in width that can look severe and feel stiff. The gentler approach, used in most fitted garments, is to spread the same total change over several rows: a few decreases every fourth or sixth row, repeated, so the fabric eases inward gradually.
