The maths it does for you
In stitches mode the tool first sets aside the stitches your buttonholes will use — two buttonholes that each take two stitches reserve four stitches in total. It then takes the remaining plain stitches and divides them into one more segment than there are buttonholes, so there is a balanced plain run before the first buttonhole, between each pair, and after the last. When the numbers do not divide evenly — and they almost never do — it shares the leftovers out so only a few segments are a single stitch longer, keeping everything as even as the stitch count allows. The sequence always adds back up to your exact band stitch count, so you can trust it without re-counting. In rows mode it anchors the first and last buttonhole an equal margin from each edge and spaces the rest evenly between, rounding each to the nearest whole row.
The fit check adds a layer most spacing tools skip. A quick worked example
Say your picked-up band has 90 stitches and you want 6 buttonholes, each a small yarn-over taking 2 stitches. The buttonholes use 12 stitches, leaving 78 to share across 7 plain segments — about 11 each, with a couple slightly larger tucked toward the ends. Stitches vs rows — choosing the right mode
This is where quick calculators usually fall short, because the two band constructions need completely different maths. A sideways band, knit along a row of picked-up stitches, places its buttonholes along that single row — so you need a stitch sequence, and the buttonholes physically consume stitches. A vertical front band, worked up the rows as you go, places a buttonhole every so many rows as it climbs — so you need row positions and a comfortable margin from the neckline and hem, and the buttonholes do not affect your stitch count. Using a stitch formula on a row-worked band (or the reverse) is exactly how button bands end up crooked. Choosing the right mode here keeps your buttons in a clean, even line.
There is a practical tell for which mode you are in. If you cast on the band at one short edge and knit until it is long enough to run the full length of the cardigan front, you are working up the rows — rows mode. If you pick up stitches all along the finished front edge and work outward for an inch or two of ribbing, you are working across the stitches — stitches mode. Second, the buttonhole length should be very slightly smaller than the button, because knit fabric stretches; a hole the exact size of the button will gape and let it slip, while a hole a touch smaller grips and holds. Third, the buttonhole width you enter here should match the real stitches your chosen buttonhole consumes, so the spacing maths reserves the right room. A yarn-over buttonhole takes about two stitches; a one-row horizontal buttonhole binds off and casts on three, four, or more for a larger button. Get these three in harmony and the band looks effortless; ignore them and even perfect spacing can look off.
Pro tips for a flawless band
- Place buttons with the band relaxed, not stretched — ribbed bands pull in, so measure them at rest and let the fit check read your at-rest gauge.
- Put a button at any point of strain (the fullest part of the bust, or right at the neckline) so the front cannot gape, then space the rest around it.
- Once you have the spacing, nudge a buttonhole a stitch left or right so it lands in a knit column of your rib rather than mid-purl — it looks far tidier.
- Knit the buttonhole band before the button band, then sew the buttons to match the holes exactly — far easier than the other way round.
- Make a tiny swatch of your chosen buttonhole first; some stretch more than others and you want the button to sit snug, not loose.
- Orient horizontal (one-row) buttonholes when you want a button to resist being tugged open by side-to-side pull; vertical buttonholes suit bands where the pull is up and down.
