Why use a knitting calculator?

Knitting is mostly relaxing, rhythmic work — right up until the maths arrives. "Cast on enough stitches for a 21-inch hat." "Decrease 12 evenly across the row." "Pick up stitches evenly along the edge." These instructions assume you will stop, do some arithmetic with your own gauge, and get it right on the first try. Get it wrong and the hat is too big, the band ripples, the crown puckers, and you are ripping back rows on the sofa. Start with gauge — everything depends on it

Gauge is how many stitches and rows fit into a set measurement, usually four inches or ten centimetres, with your yarn and needles.
